South Indian Amla (Gooseberry) rasam | Healthy and delicious Nellikai rasam | No Tamarind - No Rasam powder rasam

RECIPE

Gooseberry / Amla / Nellikai is a powerhouse of nutrients. It is rich in Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium and can be consumed raw, juiced or in pickles, jams, rasam, soups etc. It has great benefits in raising immunity in our body and being helpful in curing colds. Normally children won't take Amla as raw hence planned to prepare this Amla rasam to fight against  COVID-19.


Ready in 30 minutes
Serves 6 people

Ingredients

 ½ tsp turmeric powder
• Coriander leaves
• 3 cups Water
• Salt as needed

To Grind:


• 4 Amla (Gooseberry)
• 2 Tomatoes
• 1/2 tbsp Toor dal
• 1/2 tbsp Coriander seeds
• 1 tsp pepper
• 1 tsp cumin seeds
• Ginger a small piece
• Asafoetida 2 pinches

To Temper:

2 tsp ghee
• 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
• Curry leaves few

Instructions

⧪ Heat a pan add 1 tsp ghee.

⧪ Add the toor dal, coriander seeds, pepper, cumin seeds, small piece ginger, asafoetida and curry leaves to this.


⧪ Saute in low flame till the dal turns golden brown.

⧪ Now add roughly chopped gooseberry, roughly chopped tomatoes, and salt.


⧪ Saute in low flame for 5 minutes.

⧪ Allow this to cool completely and grind into a fine paste.

⧪ Add the paste to the pan.

⧪ Add 3 cups of water to this.

⧪ Now add the turmeric powder, asafoetida, and salt.


⧪ Mix well and wait for the rasam to froth up. Keep the flame in medium-low flame.

⧪ Do not boil this. Switch off the flame.

⧪ Garnish with coriander leaves and finely chopped tomato(optional) and temper ½ tsp mustard seeds in 1 tsp ghee.


⧪ Add this to the rasam and serve hot with plain rice.

Tips

1. You can add a green chilli (if needed according to your spice level )to the rasam while grinding the paste. This is No Tamarind - No Sambar powder rasam.

2. Since gooseberry gives us sour taste for rasam, Tamarind is not needed.
