Krishnajayanthi, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed  on the eighth day (Ashtami) of 'Aavani' in tamil month which overlaps with August and September month.

It is an important festival. Dance-drama enactments of the life of Krishna according to the Bhagavata Purana (such as Rasa lila or Krishna Lila), devotional singing through the midnight when Krishna was born, fasting, and a festival on the following day are a part of the Janmashtami celebrations.

People decorate their houses by drawing Maa kolams at the entrance of the house as well as inside the house. They draw Krishna's footprints from outside of the house up to the Pooja room.

 Small kids are decorated and dressed as Krishna & Radha. They offer Butter, Navaneetham, Shrikant, Uppu Seedai, Vella Seedai, Thattai, Murukku, Appam etc., to Lord Krishna with the utmost faith and devotion.
